Huawei Stresses Openness and IP Protection at Annual Innovation Forum

Beijing, China – November 11, 2025 — Huawei hosted its sixth Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Forum today, bringing together global IP experts to discuss the crucial role of openness and robust IP protection in accelerating innovation and social progress. The event also featured the announcement of the company’s biennial “Top Ten Inventions” award winners.

Liuping Song, Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to open innovation and respecting the IP of others, stating, “Open innovation drives society and technology forward, and it’s in our DNA.” The company noted that the patent royalties it has paid over the years are nearly three times the amount of royalties it has received, which stood at approximately US$630 million in licensing revenue in 2024.

Global IP Leadership

The forum highlighted Huawei’s significant role in the global IP ecosystem. Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), noted that Huawei has been the top user of WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system since 2014, with 6,600 published PCT applications in 2024.

Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department, emphasized that the company shares its vast technological contributions through multiple channels:

  • Patents: By the end of 2024, more than 2.7 billion 5G devices and 3.2 billion multimedia devices were licensed under Huawei’s patents.
  • Open Source: The company’s source code for OpenHarmony grew by 10 million lines, and openEuler exceeded 10 million installations.
  • Standards: Huawei submitted over 10,000 technical contributions to standards organizations in 2024.

Enhancing the Research Ecosystem

As part of its efforts to support the broader research community, Huawei announced major updates to its free patent search platform, Chaspark Patent, which was launched in June 2024. New features include semantic search and AI summary capabilities, making complex patent information more accessible to students, researchers, and small organizations globally.

The company concluded the forum by stressing its dedication to building an environment that protects IP and fosters constructive collaboration across the industry.
